Sheikh Khalifa was born in Qal'at (Palace) Al Muwaiji in the city of Al Ain on September 7, 1948 and was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the UAE. The UAE Constitution stipulates in Article 52 that the term of the President and Vice President is five Gregorian years, and they may be re-elected for the same position.
