According to media reports, the new technique relies on an ultrafast microscope using frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technology, along with artificial intelligence algorithms that help accurately analyze the movement of platelets during blood flow.

This procedure uses samples taken from arm veins, rather than coronary arteries, making the procedure less invasive and easier to perform.

The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications. Researchers analyzed blood samples from more than 200 patients with varying degrees of coronary artery disease.

Microscopic images showed greater platelet aggregation in patients with acute coronary syndrome compared to those with chronic symptoms.

Dr. Kazutoshi Hirose, Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo Hospital and lead author of the study, explained that platelets are a key component in the formation of blood clots and play a crucial role in the development of heart disease.

The research team noted that the microscope used is capable of capturing thousands of images per second of moving blood cells, while artificial intelligence accurately analyzes these images, distinguishing individual platelets and their clumps, as well as neighboring white blood cells.

This technology enables doctors to detect subtle patterns invisible to the naked eye, helping them track platelet behavior with high accuracy and thus customize treatment. This is particularly important in cases where patients do not respond consistently to anticoagulant medications.

Concluding his statement, Hirose said, "Our technology represents a step toward personalized medicine in the treatment of heart disease, where treatment plans can be tailored to each patient's platelet behavior, rather than following a standardized treatment protocol for everyone."
