The Kuwait Cabinet has approved a paid public holiday in celebration of the Islamic New Year for 1448 AH. The decision was announced during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al Yousef.
According to an official statement the holiday schedule will depend on the final number of days in Dhu Al Hijjah for the year 1447 AH. The Cabinet outlined two possible scenarios for the official leave period.
The decision applies to all ministries government agencies public authorities and public institutions across Kuwait. It is part of the country's official holiday calendar for the Islamic New Year.
Under the first scenario if Dhu Al Hijjah consists of twenty nine days Tuesday June 16 will be observed as a paid public holiday. Government employees would then return to work on Wednesday June 17.
The Cabinet explained that this arrangement would provide a one day official holiday linked to the beginning of the new Hijri year. The schedule will be confirmed once the lunar month is officially determined.
Under the second scenario if Dhu Al Hijjah consists of thirty days Wednesday June 17 will be designated as a paid public holiday for government employees.
In this case Thursday June 18 will be treated as a rest day because it falls between two non working periods. Employees would resume their duties on Sunday June 21.
The Kuwait Cabinet stated that entities with special operational requirements may determine their own holiday schedules through the competent authorities responsible for their affairs while taking the public interest into consideration.
