Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated the first phase of the Hessa Street Development Project, marking a significant step in enhancing the emirate’s road infrastructure. The newly opened section extends 4.5 kilometres from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Zayed Road, aiming to improve traffic flow and accommodate growing mobility demands.
The Authority announced good news for citizens and residents, stating that the completed works include the widening of Hessa Street and the upgrading of bridges at its intersections with Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Road, and Sheikh Zayed Road. This expansion increases the roadway to four lanes in each direction, contributing to smoother traffic flow for vehicles coming from Al Khail Road toward Hessa Street and onward to Sheikh Zayed Road, while helping to reduce congestion, particularly during peak hours.
RTA confirmed that the overall project has reached 90% completion, with the remaining works—covering road upgrades, bridges, intersections, and dedicated cycling tracks—scheduled to open in the second quarter of the year.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that the project, with a total value of approximately AED 690 million, aligns with the leadership’s directives to continuously upgrade Dubai’s road network and support rapid urban and population growth.
The Hessa Street development serves key residential and development areas, including Al Sufouh Second, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle, and is expected to cater to more than 640,000 residents by 2030. Once fully completed, the project will double the road’s capacity, increasing traffic flow from 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions to 16,000 vehicles per hour, representing a 100% increase.
The project also features the enhancement of four major intersections, including a flyover at the junction with Sheikh Zayed Road to facilitate right-turn movements toward Hessa Street eastbound. Additional upgrades include widened bridges and improved signal-controlled junctions at First Al Khail Road and Al Asayel Street, as well as the previously completed Hessa–Al Khail interchange.
Supporting sustainable mobility, the project introduces 13.5 kilometres of cycling and e-scooter tracks, linking Al Sufouh with Dubai Hills and connecting to Dubai Internet City Metro Station. A dedicated cycling and pedestrian bridge crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road features a distinctive architectural design inspired by the surrounding environment.
These developments coincide with a broader programme of traffic improvements across Dubai, including road widening, new turning lanes, upgraded intersections, and enhanced traffic signal operations. Collectively, these initiatives aim to reduce travel times, improve road safety, and deliver a smoother, more efficient mobility experience, reinforcing Dubai’s vision of becoming one of the world’s leading cities in infrastructure quality and transportation efficiency.
