Dubai is taking a decisive step toward environmental sustainability as Dubai Municipality announced that the final phase of banning single-use plastic products will officially come into effect on January 1, 2026. The move is part of the implementation of Executive Council Resolution No. (124) of 2023, issued by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai.

This phase aligns with the provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. (380) of 2022, which regulates the use of single-use products across UAE markets, reinforcing nationwide efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable consumption.

Plastic Items Covered by the Final Ban

The final stage focuses on banning a wide range of single-use plastic products, including but not limited to plastic plates, plastic cutlery such as forks, knives, and chopsticks, plastic beverage cups and lids.

The ban also extends to products already prohibited in Dubai during 2025, such as polystyrene cups, plates and containers, plastic stirrers, plastic cotton swabs, plastic table covers, and plastic straws.

Awareness Guide and Sustainable Alternatives

To support businesses and consumers during this transition, Dubai Municipality has developed a comprehensive awareness guide on the use of single-use products. The guide aims to facilitate the selection of eco-friendly alternatives and encourage a shift toward reusable and sustainable materials.

Promoting a Culture of Sustainability

In collaboration with government and private sector partners, Dubai Municipality continues to promote responsible environmental behavior and sustainable practices among individuals and institutions. These efforts contribute to improving quality of life, preserving natural resources, and reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global leader in sustainability and environmental innovation.

Phased Implementation Timeline

The first phase of the resolution began on January 1, 2024, banning single-use plastic bags while maintaining a 25-fils charge on alternative bags until June 1, 2024, when the second phase came into effect banning all single-use bags.

The third phase commenced on January 1, 2025, expanding the ban to include additional products such as polystyrene cups and food containers, plastic straws, plastic cotton swabs, plastic table covers, and plastic stirrers.

Overall, the resolution aims to protect the natural environment and biodiversity, encourage sustainable lifestyles, promote recycled materials, and motivate the private sector to provide reusable alternatives—supporting Dubai’s vision for a circular and green economy.
