A citizen has fallen victim to an online fraud scheme after responding to a misleading Instagram advertisement promoting locally sourced lamb at unusually low prices.
According to the reported details, the advertisement offered lamb meat for 2.5 dinars per kilogram, a price significantly below market rates, attracting the victim’s attention.
The advertisement included a WhatsApp contact number, and the citizen communicated with an individual who claimed that the offer was available for a limited time only.
After agreeing to purchase twenty kilograms of meat, the seller stated that payment would be made upon delivery and requested only one dinar as a reservation confirmation fee.
The victim was then sent a payment link and instructed to complete the small transaction through the provided website.
Moments after entering the required information, the citizen discovered that the entire balance of the bank account had been withdrawn.
Authorities indicated that the fraudulent link was designed to obtain banking information and provide scammers with access to the victim’s financial account.
Following the incident, the citizen filed an official report at the relevant police station to initiate legal procedures and investigate the case.
A security source renewed warnings against interacting with suspicious or unverified links circulated through social media platforms and messaging applications.
The source emphasized that entering banking details into untrusted websites can allow criminals to gain full access to financial accounts regardless of the amount involved.
Authorities also urged the public to verify the legitimacy of commercial accounts and remain cautious of offers that appear dramatically cheaper than prevailing market prices.
Officials stressed that digital awareness remains one of the most effective tools for protecting individuals from increasingly sophisticated online fraud schemes.
